Another from my trip to Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State earlier this month. While not as flashy as many of the photos I have with more wildflowers and pink skies (coming soon), I quite like this one made above upper Tipsoo Lake early in the morning. I am not a morning person, so getting up at 5am to drive the distance to Tipsoo lake was an accomplishment. I wonder if this is easier for the coffee drinkers? Every other time I’ve successfully dragged my butt out of bed that early – Rainier has only welcomed me with overcast skies. While the really great pink light on the overhead clouds did not happen on this morning, there was some good alpenglow on Rainier before the sun came up over Naches Peak behind me.

So if you are in some location far from home (or even close to it) – get your butt out of bed for sunrise. That is as much of a reminder for myself as it may be for you. 😀

About a month ago I was at Upper Tipsoo Lake in Mount Rainier National Park during sunset. My main focus there was the great display of wildflowers, as the mountain itself was being a bit shy with the clouds. I was lucky enough that while making this photo the silhouette of Rainier showed through the top of the clouds along with a nice bit of sunset light. A lack of a breeze to mar the nice reflection was nice too!

Christine Falls – Mt. Rainier National Park

This is Christine Falls in Mt. Rainier National Park. The last time I stopped to photograph Christine Falls, Mt. Rainier National Park was quite busy and there was a considerable lineup for the viewpoint. This time (in mid October) there were few people around and I could take all the time I wanted. Much more relaxing than having in the back of your mind that people are lined up waiting for your spot. The water level was also a bit lower on this occasion which I think yielded a nicer shot and let the blue colour of the water show through better.

Reflection Lakes and Mt. Rainier

I know the Reflection Lakes are a very common subject in Mt. Rainier National Park and, being right beside the road, readily accessible. I still love this spot though, and since on my other two trips to Rainier it was first surrounded by snow and then very windy I lingered in the early evening on my recent October trip. Unfortunately it was a bit late in the year to get a good foreground subject as the wildflowers were long past, but I still like this result – the reflection is almost perfect. Not terribly original though but I have written in a notebook that I bring with me on such trips a few compositional ideas I have for next time. Without it I tend to forget my ideas until a few hours after I have left an area, having returned to implement those very ideas. Of course, this all hinges on me remembering to bring the notebook…
